The road trip is a great Australian past-time thanks to the vast distances between our major cities. We really are spoilt for spacious landscape in this country, however a drive to the next major capital city is often a full-day’s undertaking or more, a round trip easily taking up a weekend, and that’s without activities along the way! If only these trips could be completed in a timelier fashion, leaving us more time to enjoy our destination; enter the Private Pilot’s Licence.

Let’s dive into what a PPL involves, the steps to get one, the requirements, and the privileges it grants to the pilot.

This takes the pilot beyond being able to fly just for the fun of it and allows them to utilise an aircraft for purpose, that being the transport of people and belongings over distance.

The minimum age required to be issued a PPL is 17. You can start your training before this (the same as starting RPL training before you turn 16) provided you turn 17 before the PPL Flight Test.

As with exercising the privileges of any aircrew licence, you’ll still need to hold a valid medical certificate. More information on aviation medical requirements can be found at the Aviation medicals and certificates | Civil Aviation Safety Authority

The first step in your PPL training, if you’ve conducted your RPL training in a smaller aircraft, is to get you checked out on a larger aircraft capable of carrying enough fuel and travelling fast enough to cover meaningful distances. At the CCAC, this usually means a step up from a Cessna 150/152 to either a Cessna 172, or a Piper Cherokee. Once checked out on a “touring aircraft”, you will begin to learn the fundamentals of navigation and flight planning. Moreso than for an RPL Licence Holder, the ability to read and interpret aeronautical charts, meteorological forecasts, and other briefing documents becomes vital not only to the successful completion of a flight, but to its safe and efficient conduct. The theory for these skills can be self-studied with guidance from our instructors, or you can attend one of our dedicated PPL theory courses.

At the Central Coast Aero Club, we also have a certified flight simulator that allows us to simulate certain higher-intensity portions of navigation flights on the ground where we can pause, rewind, reposition, and discuss the operation of the aircraft in a low-stake environment before climbing into an actual aircraft. Many students have found this to be a far-less intimidating approach to navigating as the workload jumps significantly from the RPL to the PPL pilot level.

This is the legal minimum set by CASA, however experience across the industry has shown that students rarely (if ever) obtain a PPL in this time frame, with the average student of average competency taking closer to 60-70 hours (inclusive of RPL Training Hours – approx. 30-35hrs). As flying operates on a competency-based syllabus, everyone will require a different amount of time to reach the required standards of their training.

Following the end of WWII, multiple airfields that had been constructed for emergency and training use during war time (Tuggerah, Bateau Bay, Woy Woy) were given over to non-aviation related uses and development, leaving only a handful of private, unimproved fields, including the Parry’s Airfield site to the east of Wyong Racecourse which had a reputation for prolonged periods of flooding.

This area itself did not provide enough space for the desired length of runway, and so informal arrangements were made with other landowners surrounding the site to clear enough space to allow the construction of a modest runway of about 1000 metres in length. The members of what had now become known as the Central Coast Aero Club petitioned the Wyong Shire Council to rezone the land for aerodrome use (the land at the time having been zoned “rural” and used for dairy farming). Considering possible future noise abatement issues, the Council slated the future zoning as “light industrial”. One of the members key to the success of this plan, Jack Grant, lent his name to the road that still services the airfield to this day.

In the mid-1980’s, Wyong Shire Council abandoned its existing support for the Parry’s Airfield site and instead entered into negotiations with the Aero Club to begin support in earnest for the future planning and development of the Warnervale site. The resulting deal, a “land-swap”, saw the Aero Club trade land assets on the western side of the runway, along with land comprising the middle third of the runway, with the Council in exchange for land surrounding the Aero Club buildings. The result of this swap saw the entire length of the runway placed in the hands of the Council, who promptly carried out sealing works to the existing runway as well as the installation of power and water facilities to the site. A further condition of the swap was that the Aero Club would be responsible for the continued management and maintenance of the runway and associated infrastructure; any routine maintenance costs were funded by the Aero Club – again a no cost to Council. Council was responsible only for capital upgrade works such as substantial runway and/or taxiway works. This image shows how the airport looked in the 1980’s.

Opposition to these proposals culminated in political intervention with the establishment of the Warnervale Airport Restriction Act 1996 (WAR Act) in NSW State Parliament. The WAR Act essentially allowed operations to continue at Warnervale Airport unaffected, however should the runway specifications change at any time (such as an extension to allow expanded operations) then the legislation would “activate” and impose significant limitations on airport operations. Essentially, the legislation curtailed the ability for Wyong Shire Council to develop the airport site beyond its existing state. In 2016 Council were found to have breached this requirement by performing some maintenance works on the runway, and there was a fear that the limitations in the Act may be triggered, which would make the site almost unusable. This culminated in the State Government agreeing to repeal the WAR Act completely – freeing up the site to operate to its full capability.

The arrangements between the Aero Club and Council (re: runway ownership and maintenance responsibilities) continued unchanged until 2015 when management and maintenance responsibilities were transferred to Council staff.

Today, the Aero Club, which won the prestigious CASA Wings award for National Aero Club of the Year in 2022, remains on the site it was first established, just to the east of the runway, and flight training continues as it has done since 1975. The only significant airfield between Sydney and Newcastle, Warnervale continues to provide an aviation presence on the Central Coast and sees numerous firefighting, medivac, and other community service flights each year.

Council has recently resolved to commence work on developing a masterplan to ensure the proper management of the site and sensible aviation related growth within its current footprint.

By meeting the basic requirements and completing the necessary training and exams, you can enjoy the thrill of flying. The RPL provides a solid foundation for your aviation adventures.

Once you obtain your RPL, you can add endorsements such as navigation, controlled airspace, flight activity endorsements (aerobatics or formation flying) or design feature endorsements (retractable undercarriage or manual propeller pitch control).

Or you can move onto a full Private Pilot licence (PPL), which allows for flight anywhere in Australia (or indeed the world) in larger, faster aircraft, and allows for specialised activities such as flying at night or in cloud. Or you can even progress to a full Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL), a professional qualification, which allows you to be paid to fly.

Ready to take the first step?

Start by researching local flight schools and training operators.
It is a good question – and an important one if you are potentially going to be spending thousands, or tens of thousands of dollars toward achieving your dreams.

Some flying schools are focussed on full-time, academy style classes which often have strict intake periods and are geared toward fast tracking candidates through to a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL). This can then lead to an Air Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL), allowing for a career in the airlines.

These schools are often ‘Part 142’ schools (although not always), where the theory component is integrated with the flight training. This means that you will be sitting through classes on-site at the school or affiliated institution for all your training – there is no option available for self-study on the theory side. They will often be affiliated with a higher education provider and provide a bachelor’s degree or certificate as part of the course.

A consequence of this is that the total cost to achieve the CPL qualification can cost far more than at a school that offers ‘Part 141’ training – often up to almost twice the cost of an equivalent Part 141 school.

It is important to note – these schools generally cannot guarantee an ‘airline job’, unless it is through a dedicated airline cadetship program, so beware of any who offer these false promises!

A Part 141 school offers the exact same qualification, with the same ability to lead to a career in the airlines, or indeed any other sector of aviation, but the theory component is more flexibly delivered and usually is handled in-house at the flying school. Students have the option of self-studying much of the theory or can include structured theory classes or even one-on-one tuition as their situation dictates.

As a very rough guide, a Part 141 school CPL will cost somewhere in the region of $75-$85,000 and the same qualification at a Part 142 school will cost somewhere between $120-$160,000 (be sure to check with the school you are enquiring with).

There is no right or wrong way to go about the process – some students thrive in the formal course structure offered by the Part 142 academy style schools, and are happy to accept the higher overall cost, others much prefer the more tailored, one-on-one solution available at Part 141 providers and enjoy a significant cost saving.

The answer is different for everybody and really comes down to both your time and financial resources.

Put simply, the more often you fly, generally the less the pilot’s licence will cost overall. This is because flight training is competency based, meaning that you can only progress beyond certain milestones when a minimum level of competency is consistently demonstrated. Recency really helps with progress, so generally you will require les hours to attain your pilot licence if you fly more often.

Of course, nobody has unending time or financial resources (not many people anyway!), so the frequency of your training is dependent on what fits best around your schedule.

As a general guide, you should aim to fly a minimum of one lesson per fortnight – this would have you achieve you Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) in around 18 months. An hour or two per week is great if you can fit it in – and the most efficient way to achieve your licence is to dedicate a block of time to your flying and fly 4-5 days per week. This can accelerate your pathway to RPL and have it achieved within a month or two.

At the CCAC we will tailor the flight training and theory tuition to suit YOUR schedule.
