What is the Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL)?

Commercial pilot training focuses on developing professional-level flying skills and building the experience required for commercial aviation operations.

Throughout this phase of training you will continue to build pilot-in-command flight hours, including solo navigation flights that help you meet the required experience levels for the licence.

Training also includes advanced aircraft handling, navigation exercises and preparation for the final CPL flight test.

CPL Theory

The theory component of the Commercial Pilot Licence is more comprehensive than previous licences.

Instead of a single exam, the CPL theory syllabus consists of seven separate CASA theory exams covering the core knowledge required for professional pilots.

These exams must be completed within a two-year period, allowing students to study and pass each subject progressively while continuing their flight training.

Students can prepare through self-study, structured theory support, or one-on-one tuition with instructors depending on their learning preferences.

Pre-Licence Phase

The final phase of CPL training focuses on preparing for the Commercial Pilot Licence flight test.

The final assessment is the CPL(A) flight test, conducted with a flight examiner. The test includes both a ground theory component and a practical flight assessment.

CPL Requirements

To be issued a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) in Australia, you must meet a number of minimum requirements set by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). These ensure commercial pilots have the experience, technical knowledge, and decision-making skills required to operate aircraft safely in professional aviation operations.

The CPL places a strong emphasis on building flight experience and demonstrating sound pilot-in-command judgement. Most students work toward the 200 hours of total flight time required for the licence while completing the CPL theory examinations and preparing for the final flight test.

  • Minimum Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
  • Total Flight Time: Minimum 200 hours
  • Pilot-in-Command Time: At least 100 hours as pilot-in-command (PIC).
  • Cross-Country Experience: Minimum 20 hours cross-country PIC.
  • Instrument Training: At least 10 hours instrument flight, with 5 hours in an aircraft.
  • Theory Exam: Completion of the seven CPL theory exams.
  • Flight Test: Successful completion of the CPL flight test with a flight examiner.

How Much Does The CPL Cost?

The quoted all-inclusive cost for the Commercial Pilot Licence training program starts from approximately $78,500, which includes the cost of the RPL and PPL training stages.

You do not need to pay this amount upfront. Training is conducted on a pay-as-you-go basis, allowing you to pay for each flight lesson or theory session as you progress through the course.
