This article expands on the proposals outlined in the previous week’s editorial by detailing Wyong Shire Council’s practical strategy for upgrading Warnervale Airport. Rather than simply advocating for future airline services, it explains the staged planning process involving environmental studies, zoning proposals, public consultation and participation in the Federal Government’s Aerodrome Local Ownership Plan.
The article is particularly valuable because it records the planning assumptions underpinning the proposal. Council expected Warnervale to first develop as a commuter airport serving Sydney and Newcastle before eventually accommodating medium jet aircraft if population growth and passenger demand justified the investment.
