Flight Training FAQ

No. Most students begin with no previous flying experience. Our instructors will guide you through every stage of your training, from your first lesson through to licence issue and beyond.

You need to be at least 16 years old to be issued a Recreational Pilot licence. You can commence your training earlier than this and can actually fly an aeroplane solo from 15 years old (earlier than you can drive a car by yourself!), you just need to have turned 16 by the date of the flight test for issue of the RPL.

The cost of learning to fly varies depending on a number of factors including how frequently you train and the type of aircraft used during training. Most students realistically complete their RPL training in 35 – 40 hours and the approximate cost is $17,525 based on a Cessna 150. Our team can discuss your goals and provide the right information to help you plan your aviation journey.

To commence training, you will require at least a CACA Class 5 medical certificate however you will probably want to arrange a Class 2 medical certificate prior to completing your Recreational Pilot licence as a Class 5 does have some restictions. Our instructors can explain the requirements that apply to your aviation goals and help guide you through the process.

Yes, many pilots wear glasses or contact lenses while flying. In most cases, corrected vision is acceptable provided it meets the relevant medical standards. If you have concerns about your eyesight or medical eligibility, we recommend discussing them with your aviation medical examiner (DAME) or contacting our team for guidance.

We recommend flying at least once per week to maintain continuity and progress efficiently. More frequent lessons can help you reach your goals sooner and save money, but we can tailor training to suit your schedule and budget.

The timeframe varies depending on your goals, availability and frequency of training. Some students complete their licence in several months, while others spread training over a longer period.  CASA guidelines state a minimum of 25 hours however we have found that realistically it will take between 35 and 40 hours.  All our costs are structured around real world experience.

Yes. Many of our students balance flight training with work, study or family commitments. Lessons can be scheduled to suit your availability.

Pilot Licences FAQ

The Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) is the first pilot licence obtained in Australia. It allows you to fly as pilot in command of certain aircraft within specific operational limitations.  These limitations are listed on our training pages.

The Private Pilot Licence allows pilots to undertake a wider range of flying activities, including longer cross-country flights and additional training endorsements. This is the next level up from a Recreational Pilot Licence.

The Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) is the first pilot licence and provides the foundation for your aviation journey. A Private Pilot Licence (PPL) builds on the skills gained during RPL training and offers greater flexibility, including the ability to undertake cross-country flights, navigate to controlled airports and enjoy a wider range of flying opportunities.

The Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) is the first pilot licence and the starting point for all student pilots. It provides the foundation for learning to fly and developing the skills required for further training. After completing an RPL, pilots may choose to progress to a Private Pilot Licence (PPL), additional endorsements and ratings, or commercial pilot training, depending on their aviation goals.

Yes. Pilots who wish to pursue a career in aviation typically progress from a Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) to a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) before undertaking Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) training. While many pilots continue flying recreationally after obtaining their PPL, those seeking a professional flying career can continue their training through to a CPL and additional ratings.
