Published during the campaign for the March 1995 NSW state election, this article demonstrates how the proposed expansion of Warnervale Airport had begun to become a political as well as a planning issue.
Independent Swansea candidate and Lake Macquarie councillor Mark Booth raised concerns about the potential effects of airport development on communities north and north-east of Warnervale, specifically Mannering Park, San Remo and Blue Haven. His comments focused on aircraft noise, alleged exhaust fallout and the possible effect of airport operations on residents’ quality of life.
The article is particularly useful when considered alongside other February 1995 material in the archive. On 16 February, a letter titled “No consultation!” protested proposed extensions at Warnervale and referred to fears of Boeing 737 cargo aircraft. On 23 February, another letter, “Time to make a noise about airport upgrade,” called for a public meeting and formation of a residents’ action group.
Together, these items show that within a short period the airport proposal was generating organised public concern and attracting the attention of candidates contesting the approaching state election.
The geographical references are also significant. Opposition was not confined to Warnervale itself; concerns were being expressed about potential impacts on communities extending into the southern Lake Macquarie area.
