This article documents one of the earliest direct conflicts between local government and state planning authorities over aviation development on the Central Coast. Rather than discussing the proposed Warnervale Airport, the focus is on a privately developed airstrip in Pollock Avenue, Wyong, established by local resident Mr. Parry with the full support of Wyong Shire Council.
The State Planning Authority opposed the development because it believed the airstrip could compromise broader strategic planning for aviation within the shire. In contrast, Shire President Cr. Malcolm Chalmers argued that immediate aviation facilities were essential to support local industry and criticised delays by the Department of Civil Aviation in approving the project.
The article illustrates the tension between local economic priorities and long-term regional planning. It also highlights how aviation infrastructure was already being viewed as an important driver of industrial growth on the Central Coast during the early 1970s. The debate over Mr. Parry’s airstrip forms an important chapter in the evolution of aviation planning that ultimately led to the development of Warnervale Airport.
