This article illustrates the continuing community division over Warnervale Airport immediately after the NSW Government intervened to restrict its proposed expansion.
Significantly, it records the emergence of organised community opposition to the decision stopping the expansion, rather than opposition to the airport itself. Concerned residents planned a public meeting at Toukley District Bowling Club with the intention of forming a committee, demonstrating that organised community activism had developed on both sides of the Warnervale Airport dispute.
The article also records Wyong Shire Mayor Tony Sheridan’s view that the airport issue remained unresolved, with Planning Minister Craig Knowles involved and council staff preparing a report on possible next steps.
At the same time, the Central Coast Airport Action Group continued its campaign against airport expansion. Having lost its Land and Environment Court action, the group planned a car rally to raise money towards its legal expenses while awaiting a decision on court costs.
The clipping therefore captures an important transitional point in the controversy: although legislation had halted the proposed expansion, the political and community dispute surrounding Warnervale Airport was continuing rather than concluding.
