This letter provides the perspective of Margaret Bonney, convenor of the Friends of Warnervale Airport meeting held in July 1996, on one of the most contentious public gatherings during the Warnervale Airport dispute.
Bonney portrays anti-airport protesters as deliberately disrupting the meeting and records that more than 100 airport supporters had left before a vote was eventually taken. Despite those departures, she states that the majority remaining supported the need for a regional airport and a delegation to Premier Bob Carr.
As a letter written by the meeting convenor rather than an independent news report, it is particularly valuable as a primary source documenting how airport supporters interpreted the confrontation and their belief that a broader “silent majority” supported development of a regional airport.
