“Wyong now wants a domestic airport.” Central Coast Friday Star, 28 September 1984.
This article marks an important turning point in the history of Warnervale Airport. Rather than viewing the rejection of Warnervale as Sydney’s second international airport as the end of the region’s aviation ambitions, Wyong Shire Council immediately reframed its objective around a domestic commuter airport.
The comments by Shire President Tony Sheridan demonstrate that local government recognised the Central Coast’s genuine need for regional air services rather than international aviation. The comparison with Port Macquarie’s successful Fokker Friendship operations illustrates the type of regional airline network envisioned for Warnervale during the mid-1980s.
In hindsight, this article captures the transition from grand national airport proposals to the more realistic pursuit of a regional airport serving the Central Coast’s growing population and business community. Many of the arguments raised—regional connectivity, tourism, executive travel and economic development—would continue to be repeated in planning discussions for decades.
