The multi-engine class rating (MEA) progresses your flying from single-engine aeroplanes to multi-engine aeroplanes. A MEA rating allows you to fly piston-engine multi-engine aeroplanes below 5,700kgs. Multi-engine aircraft can typically fly faster and cover larger distances.
For private pilots, this can add a level of safety to your flying and gives you the opportunity to fly larger aircraft that can carry more passengers and/or cargo.
For commercial pilots, a MEA rating can further your flying career opportunities.
A MEA rating can be combined with a Commercial Pilot Licence or a Command Instrument Rating
To commence training for a MEA rating you must hold at least a Private Pilot Licence (PPL).
The training involves familiarisation with the aircraft and the systems, including general handling sequences and instrument flying.
The training will also introduce asymmetric operations (one-engine operations) and focus on the emergency drills to control and manage abnormal situations.
There is no theory exam requirements for a MEA rating, but a flight test with an examiner is required for the issue of the MEA rating.
The estimated cost for a MEA rating is $7,550. This includes dual flight training, ground briefings and flight test fees. This is based on average hours and can fluctuate depending on student performance.
