Club Use of Wyong Airstrip

Central Coast Express Advocate, 8 January 1975, “Club Use of Wyong Airstrip”.

Moderate Historical Significance
Records the development of the privately operated Warner Avenue airstrip into a community aviation facility. Useful context but not central to Warnervale's development.

This article documents the continuing development of the privately operated Warner Avenue airstrip following its approval as an authorised landing area in June 1974. Unlike the Central Coast Aero Club’s proposal at Warnervale, which was intended to provide a permanent regional airport capable of supporting general aviation and commuter services, this application focused on expanding community aviation activities at the existing private airstrip.

The proposal included facilities for youth and recreational aviation organisations, including a Junior Flying Club, the Air League, Air Training Corps and Scout groups, together with construction of a clubhouse. It demonstrates that, despite ongoing debate surrounding the future of Warnervale, aviation development within Wyong Shire continued on multiple fronts.

The article is also significant because it marks a shift in the Warner Avenue airstrip from a privately developed landing area towards a community-based aviation facility, reflecting the growing interest in recreational and youth aviation during the mid-1970s.

CLUB USE OF WYONG AIRSTRIP The small Warner Avenue airstrip at Wyong could soon be flourishing with activity with the approval of a development application before Wyong Shire Council. The applicant, Mr. B. Warren, of Wyoming, sought approval for use of the airstrip for the purpose of a Junior Flying Club, Scouts, Air League, Ultra Height Aircraft Association and Air Training Corps (R.A.A.F.). While the airstrip will be used as such it is also planned to build a clubhouse about 50 ft by 25 ft. The airstrip was approved by Wyong Shire in June 1974. It then became an authorised landing area. The latest application before council sought ancillary use of the strip. Portion of land would be leased to the clubs for their use.
