Central Coast Newspapers, 17 October 1973, “Air service for Wyong Shire to be discussed.”

High Historical Significance
One of the earliest public records documenting the Central Coast Aero Club's efforts to establish an airstrip at Warnervale and the beginning of formal discussions with planning authorities.

This article documents one of the earliest public planning disputes surrounding the establishment of Warnervale Airstrip (now Warnervale Airport). By October 1973, the Central Coast Aero Club had progressed from proposing an airstrip to formally challenging Wyong Shire Council’s refusal of its development application.

Rather than abandoning the proposal, the Aero Club escalated the matter to the State Planning Authority and sought a collaborative meeting involving state and local government alongside the Department of Civil Aviation. The article also shows that discussion was beginning to shift beyond the single airstrip proposal towards the broader issue of providing adequate aviation infrastructure for Wyong Shire.

This clipping is significant because it illustrates the beginning of what would become a lengthy political and planning struggle over aviation facilities on the Central Coast—one that continued for decades before Warnervale Airport eventually became established.

Air service for Wyong Shire to be discussed Central Coast Aero Club is protesting at Wyong Shire Council’s rejection of its development application to establish an airstrip at Warnervale. The club notified its action to the Council last Thursday. The protest is being made to the Gosford/Wyong Steering Committee of the State Planning Authority. The club has further requested the State Planning Authority to arrange a joint discussion on this matter with representatives of the Authority, the Council, Department of Civil Aviation and the Central Coast Aero Club. Shire Clerk, Mr. J. Dawson, commented that while he doubted if any real gains would be made from joint meetings for the specific purpose of discussing the Warnervale Airstrip proposal, he considered there could be advantages in such a meeting if it was held for the more general purpose of discussing ways and means of providing an adequate air service for Wyong Shire. Shire president, Cr. M. Chalmers, agreed to convene a meeting for this purpose and invite the State Planning Authority, D.C.A. and Central Coast Aero Club to be represented.
